About Me
Hey! I’m retired Brisbane Osteopath Bernard Michael Rochford - welcome to my BBQ Bonanza Blog!
Since retiring as an Osteopath, I’ve been enjoying the Brissy sun, cooking up a storm. I suppose in some senses, I’m doing what humans have always done–cooked meat on an open flame.
Anywho, welcome to the blog. Here, I’ll be sharing my insights, mistakes and experiences barbequing and hopefully you can learn a thing or two!
For context, I’ve been barbequing for decades now, and I (obviously) absolutely love it. Now that I’m not spending all my days as an Osteopath, I can finally pour more time into sharing what I’ve learned about BBQing. To me, it’s therapy, it’s meditation, it’s recreation and it’s a necessity. There is something so primal about hearing the sizzle of a steak, or smoking a big piece of brisket.
And with all the junk people are putting in their bodies nowadays, like seed oils, microplastics and highly processed garbage, I truly think that BBQing meats and veggies is preventative medicine.
My name is Bernard Michael Rochford, and I was an Osteopath for most of my working life. Specifically, I was an Osteopath in Brisbane, and in my role I saw people from all walks of life.
They all had different jobs, different reasons for seeing an Osteo, and they each came from different backgrounds…but every time I brought up food, I saw the exact same spark light up in each of their eyes. Sure, you could boil it all down to a science and say that we’re programmed to like food to keep ourselves alive, and that may be true. But I prefer to think of cooking as an art.
Each spice creates a different mood, like strokes of paint on a canvas. The cut of meat you choose, the heat you use, the accoutrements or sides that you add in, how you present the meal at the end…to me, barbequing isn’t just about filling my stomach; it’s about filling my soul.
So while it may seem like a stark contrast to go from being Bernard Michael Rochford the Osteopath, to Bernard Michael Rochford the BBQ’er extraordinaire, to me it’s just a continuation of going where my soul takes me.
While this is indeed Bernard Michael Rochford’s BBQ Bonanza, I’ll be covering more than just barbequing.
To me, barbequing intersects with so many things; with health, with regenerative farming, with socialising… for me, the BBQ has been a throughline to so many lessons and life learnings, that I feel compelled to share them with y’all.
Maybe I should’ve called this Bernard Michael Rochford’s everything blog!
Surprise! Okay, while this site is about more than just BBQing, it’s still very heavily BBQ-centric. Here, I’ll be going through my tricks, tips and troubles as a self taught BBQ chef in Brisbane.
In my time researching recipes and what makes for a good cut of steak, or a tasty tomato, I’ve come to learn a lot about the effects that our diets play on our overall health.
I’ll be touching upon some of the insights I’ve learned in this regard.
Before becoming obsessed with BBQing, I knew very little about farming. Though as I started to learn more about barbequing and health, I also began to learn about different farming practices and how they can be harmful or beneficial to the quality of the food, and to the environment.
I’ve always been health focused, in large part due to my background as an Osteopath in Brisbane. I’m going to be touching upon some of the knowledge I gained through my time working as an Osteo, as well as reminiscing on my career.
Believe it or not, I have had more near-death experiences than I can count, and some of them even involve a BBQ. In this blog, I’ll be talking about experiences I’ve had (largely relating to BBQing), as well as stories I’ve heard from others while we’re cooking up a storm.
Last but certainly not least, I wanted to touch upon the social aspect of Barbequing. In Brisbane, and I’m sure in a lot of other parts of the world, it can be difficult making new friends. I will be sharing some tips on how you can host events that everyone is dying to go to, and how you can expand your social circle through the use of a BBQ.
